Leadership Lincoln County- '25-'26 February Session

Leadership Lincoln County sees Legislature in action in February Session

The 2025-26 class of Leadership Lincoln County traveled to Lincoln early Feb. 17 for its monthly session. The visit gave participants the opportunity to see the Nebraska Legislature in action, learn more about the legislative process and tour both the Nebraska State Capitol and the Governor’s Mansion.
After arriving at the Capitol, Leadership Lincoln County observed the Legislature in session. From the viewing balcony, the group watched senators debate bills, introduce amendments and vote on legislation. Seeing senators on the floor discussing bills and amendments with colleagues highlighted their role in representing constituents in their districts and Nebraskans across the state.
Following the session, the group heard from individuals involved in the day-to-day work of the Capitol. Hunter Traynor, executive vice president of legislation and policy, discussed this year’s legislative priorities and challenges. A lobbyist also shared insights about the role and how advocates work with lawmakers on specific issues before the Legislature.
Leadership Lincoln County also welcomed Tori Osborne, legislative aide to Sen. Mike Jacobson. Osborne explained her responsibilities, shared behind-the-scenes perspectives on working in a legislative office and outlined the detailed process a bill goes through. She also discussed several issues Sen. Jacobson is focusing on during this legislative session.
After lunch in the Capitol cafeteria, the group participated in a guided tour of the Capitol building. The tour highlighted the building’s history and showcased the intricate design details found throughout the structure, from the floors to the ceilings.
The group then visited the Governor’s Mansion for another tour filled with history and meaningful details. One feature that stands out upon entering the foyer is the pineapple carvings on the staircase, symbols of hospitality and friendship. However, one pineapple was intentionally left unfinished. According to tradition shared during the tour, some European artists and Native Americans believed leaving artwork unfinished could ward off evil spirits.
One highlight of the Governor’s Mansion was a personal decorative touch from Gov. Jim Pillen. In the formal drawing room, a small statue of a pig sits on the fireplace mantel, reflecting the governor’s background and ties to the agriculture industry.
Following the tour, Leadership Lincoln County returned to North Platte with a greater understanding of the Nebraska Legislature and the state’s history.
Overlooking the state from the top of the Nebraska State Capitol, the Golden Sower faces west toward Nebraska’s farmland and communities. It serves as a reminder that the voices and priorities of western Nebraska, including those from North Platte and Lincoln County, are part of the conversations happening in the Legislature.
